Project Story: Strandherd Crossing
Strandherd Crossing is a retail centre located close to Ottawa’s airport and downtown core. Anchored by Metro, GoodLife Fitness and Shoppers Drug Mart, the centre spans an area of nearly 124,000 sq. ft.
The centre benefitted from an already well-lit parking lot, due in most part to adequate pole heights and spacing. However, maintenance of the existing metal halide pole-mount fixtures was extremely expensive.
Property operators First Capital Realty recognized an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and save on energy while maintaining light levels by switching to LED technology. They partnered with lighting experts Concept Illumination to upgrade all of the centre’s exterior parking lot lighting and wall packs to successfully meet the operator’s goals.
Sixty-five metal halide pole-mount fixtures were replaced by fifty-two LED fixtures, supplied along with mounting hardware by Concept Illumination. Thirty-four wall packs of various types were replaced with more directional LED equivalents that provided more light on adjacent laneways and walkways.
The project was also eligible for Hydro Ottawa’s energy incentive program, resulting in a 50% rebate on the material costs and a rapid ROI on the whole project.
